Community Protection Unit

The mission of the Community Protection Unit (CPU) is to strategically address crimes that negatively impact our communities’ safety and sense of well-being. The CPU works proactively with law enforcement and members of the community to identify crime trends affecting Sonoma County. Utilizing a modified vertical prosecution model, the Community Protection Unit handles gang crimes, illegal firearms cases, and violence among juveniles. In addition, the CPU prosecutes hate crimes which are defined as any crime committed against a person which is substantially motivated by that person’s race, color, religion, national origin, disability, gender or sexual orientation. By focusing on major crime trends facing our community, as well as individual acts against protected persons, the Community Protection Unit will ensure public safety and uphold the quality of life in our community.
